Breathtaking costumes, sublime bonnets, the lace, the ribbon, the flowers, the whole bit..I was left in a stupor.
It’s only fitting that Swarovski opened the doors of its corporate archive in Milan to costume designer Sandy Powell for the recently released film The Young Victoria. The Queen, after all, was Swarovski’s first costumer (by virtue of couturier George Federick Worth) during the mid-nineteenth century.
For the film, which stars Emily Blunt as Queen Victoria and tells the story of the royal’s early reign and romance with Prince Albert, the Swiss jeweler lent Powell over 14,000 antique and costume pieces, all of which are exact replicas of Victoria’s gems.
The grandeur of the film lies in Blunt’s royal regalia on the throne, where more than 700 hand-cut Swarovski crystals were used to make her crown and scepters. Oh, to be queen for a day.
